The History and Tradition of Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, introduced the concept as a means to curb her hunger between lunch and a late evening dinner. What started as a simple affair of tea and light snacks quickly turned into a fashionable social event. The tradition soon spread across the country, and afternoon tea became a symbol of refinement and sophistication.

In the traditional British afternoon tea, you can expect a three-tiered stand filled with delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones served with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of dainty pastries and cakes. The tea itself is usually served in fine china teapots, with a variety of loose-leaf teas to choose from. It is a ritual that celebrates the art of conversation and leisurely enjoyment.

    Benefits of Enjoying Afternoon Tea

Apart from the sheer pleasure of indulging in delicious treats, there are several benefits to enjoying afternoon tea. Firstly, it provides a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allowing you to relax and unwind in a serene setting. The act of sipping tea and savoring each bite encourages mindfulness and promotes mental well-being.

Additionally, afternoon tea is a social activity that brings people together. Whether you're catching up with friends, enjoying a romantic date, or celebrating a special occasion, the shared experience of afternoon tea creates lasting memories and strengthens relationships. It is also an opportunity to dress up and feel fancy for a few hours, adding a touch of glamour to your day.

How to Find the Best Afternoon Tea Vouchers

When looking for the best afternoon tea vouchers, there are a few key factors to consider. First and foremost, research the reputation and reviews of the venue. Look for establishments with a history of excellent service and high-quality food. Online review platforms and social media can provide valuable insights from previous customers.

Next, consider the ambiance and setting of the venue. Do you prefer a cozy tearoom with vintage decor or a luxurious hotel with panoramic views? Think about the atmosphere you want to immerse yourself in and choose a venue that aligns with your preferences.

Price is another important factor to consider. Afternoon tea experiences can range from affordable to extravagant, so set a budget and look for vouchers that fit within your price range. Keep in mind that higher prices often reflect the quality of ingredients and the overall experience.

Lastly, check for any additional perks or special offers that come with the voucher. Some establishments may include complimentary champagne or extra treats, making your experience even more indulgent.

Excellent service, food and setting. We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff who then presented us with a glass of champagne each, a very nice touch. There was also an excellent selection of teas, coffee and soft drinks, which were refilled multiple times. The afternoon tea itself was delicious, consisting of a variety of finger sandwiches, plain and fruit scones with clotted cream and jam and a selection of cakes/tarts/pastries. Overall a very enjoyable experience. The only issue we encountered was the booking process. I originally sent an email but got no reply. Therefore I phoned to book, but never received the promised confirmation email. I rang up again on the day to check that all was okay, the staff were unhelpful and didn't seem to know anything, so I had to make a completely new booking.

    Questions About Afternoon Tea Experiences

Why buy an afternoon tea gift voucher?

Well, picture this: You're sipping on fragrant tea, munching on delicate sandwiches, and indulging in sweet treats, all while having a delightful chat with your favorite person. That's the magic of afternoon tea, encapsulated in a gift voucher!

    How much is afternoon tea?

The average price of afternoon tea is about £40 per person. Across the UK, the price of afternoon tea ranges in price from £15 to £199 per guest depending on the venue and the beverages (other than tea) included.

Where does the most expensive afternoon tea take place? Surprisingly, it's not even in England. The Baccarat Hotel in New York City offers a $3,000 afternoon tea (for two)!

Do any of your Afternoon Teas cater to Vegetarians/Vegans?

Some of our Afternoon Tea experiences are happy to cater to specific dietary requirements, upon request. However, many do not have this option. Please enquire on a product page if you are interested in a particular experience that does not already specify.

I would like to give an Afternoon Tea experience as a gift, is this possible? How long is it valid for?

Yes, all of our vouchers are available as gifts. At checkout you can either choose an e-voucher that will be sent to you by email, or a postal delivery gift package. All of our vouchers are valid for 12 months from the day of purchase, and must be used within this time period.

Do any of your Afternoon Teas cater for Gluten Free?

Many, but not all of our Afternoon Tea Experiences can cater to a gluten free diet upon request. A 24 hour notice is often required when booking gluten free Afternoon Teas. If you are celiac and interested in a particular experience or area, please enquire using the 'Enquire' button on a product page.

I am Gluten-free, are there Afternoon Tea options available for me?

Yes, most of our Afternoon Tea venues are happy to accommodate customers with vegetarian or gluten-free dietary needs, when given enough notice. You would simply need to alert the venue upon making a reservation. Please see specific information on individual experience pages.

Can I book an Afternoon Tea for more than 2 people?

Generally speaking, yes - the more the merrier! Many of our Afternoon Tea experiences offer the opportunity to add 1 or more additonal participants to the voucher or booking. Space will vary by location, so please see individual experience pages for specific details and restrictions.

What does Afternoon Tea actually include?

Whilst we offer a range of unique and 'boozy' Afternoon Teas, the majority of our traditional Afternoon Tea experiences will generally include a variety of savoury snacks such as finger sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, and a selection of cakes or pastries. A pot of tea (or a cup of coffee) will be provided for all guests. Specific food items will be outlined on individual experience pages.
