Evie on the Road Film Strip 4
Although it was Friday the 13th, that wasn’t going to stop me and James heading to London for a slap-up meal and live music at Dalston Jazz Bar! Located in North East London, the Jazz Bar was less than a minute’s walk from Dalston Kingsland station, tucked away down a side street, making it one of those incredible places you sometimes stumble across and come back to again and again.

We were greeted at the door by friendly staff who took our coats, then gave us a choice of tables (we chose the one closest to the bar, naturally). We ordered a bottle of wine whilst poring over the menu, which included a list of delectable dishes, most of which I’d never tried before! For starters, I went for the goat’s cheese and red onion tart, while James went for the pigeon breast, which were both delicious!

The Jazz Bar was fairly small, giving it an intimate, cosy feel. There were huge posters lining the walls and mismatched furniture adding to the decor, with the kitchen being open plan so we could see the chefs hard at work. The jazz band started up soon after we arrived, playing a jazz manouche style set that blended in with the surroundings perfectly. We were told the band changes weekly, so the variety of music is broad and there’s always something new to discover!

For our main course, I chose the pheasant and James had the rabbit – you can tell there was a great selection of game on the menu! The meat was served with a small portion of dauphinoise potatoes and seasonal vegetables, which were absolutely divine. After the first bottle of wine we decided to treat ourselves and get a bottle of Prosecco, which the waiter opened with a flourish. I have to take a moment to talk about how great the staff were, they were all incredibly friendly and entertaining, telling us ‘That’s the spirit!’ when we started to dance to the music in our seats. They really added to the experience, making it a very enjoyable evening.

Moving on to my favourite course, dessert! I went for the carrot cake while James, feeling adventurous, went for the sweet potato pie, so we both had vegetable cakes! The carrot cake was lovely and moist, while the sweet potato pie was deliciously rich, flavoured with cinnamon and almond.

We stayed a while longer to enjoy the music and our drinks, then the jazz band came over to talk to us about the filming we were doing. They were really friendly guys, and the double-bass player, Viktor Obsust, is pretty well known in the jazz music scene for anyone who wants to check them out!

Retrieving our coats, we made our goodbyes to the awesome staff (our waitress even gave us a hug!) and headed back to the station, feeling sated and merry. It really was a perfect evening, with great company, music and food. The service was fast and efficient, and the staff were professional yet amusing. Huge thanks to Robert for inviting us along, a highly commendable night out!
