Bird Of Prey Experience Days: Experience Raptor rapture with this fantastic falconry experience in Warwickshire. Just a short drive from Birmingham and Coventry, and less than an hour from Northampton, this aviary is home to an astounding array of beautiful winged predators. Birds of prey are fascinating, mysterious, and regal - it's no wonder, then, that falconry was originally an art practised by kings and noblemen. But no longer do you need blue blood if you want to get up close and personal with these fascinating feathered friends of ours. This half day experience will give you the chance to learn falconry basics, and allow you to get hands-on with owls, falcons and hawks.

These are big, strong birds - but when you feel the weight of one landing on your gloved arm, and feel the strength of its formidable talons, you'll realise just how big and strong they really are.The half day course starts at 10.30am, where the participants begin by spending some time in the office learning the history of Falconry, and becoming familiar with the equipment used by falconers. After this, it's time to meet the birds - a stunning variety of hawks, falcons, and owls. The next stage of the experience is the first part of the bird's training (Manning), where you will walk around the centre with one of the birds, so that it gets used to the area - and you, of course!

Training then starts - normally with a Harris Hawk - and you will learn just how the birds are encouraged to fly back to their human hunting partners. The final part of the experience will be 'free-flying', really enjoying the form and power of the bird (usually a European Eagle Owl) at its best.

I booked the half day falconry experience and in one word I'd summarise it as incredible! Danielle was full of knowledge, very interesting, passionate and happy to answer an array of questions about the birds. There are plenty of birds to see and all have a different story to offer. As far as the flying time goes - there was plenty of time. I was lucky enough to be the only one booked on the day albeit the group sizes are very small even when fully booked. We flew a barn owl and harris hawk as part of the flying time. A highly recommended and unforgettable experience. Thank you Danielle!

I/we didn't know quite what to expect from the details on the booking info. However the venue turned out to be a lot better than anticipated. The host plus his assistant proved to be very welcoming . The experience was held indoors due to the outside winds , but this proved to be a bonus. We were among a group of approx 20 clients. Partners were allowed to attend in the building and my wife really enjoyed the day as well . The facilities at the site were very good. Meals were provided from a menu , paid for on arrival . Very well worth it. Came away from the experience having really enjoyed it . Learnt a lot from the owner (host) who was obviously really passionate about his birds .

We thoroughly enjoyed our falconry day. Danielle made the experience - she was so knowledgeable and passionate and you can really tell enjoys her work. After having a tour of the falconry and learning its history, we got to head out into the fields and have a go at training the birds ourselves. I never knew they could have so much character! We had such a laugh with the hawks and barn owls. Would recommend to anyone who has any interest in wildlife, a fantastic day out.

My friend bought this experience for me as a birthday gift she also bought a voucher for herself so we could go together. I was intrigued to see what this day had in-store for me as i have never been on a experience like this. I have pleasantly surprised! I had an amazing day learning all about the different birds and where they came from. My favorite was the barn owl! Danielle was an amazing host, she gave us a tour around the sight and informed us about the different birds. Overall this was a brilliant experience, I would recommend this to family and friend.

The experience was done at Haven Falconry on the Isle of Wight. I was expected at arrival, and warmly greeted by all members of staff. I was immediately integral to the daily ministrations of dealing with the flying of the birds of prey, even to the point of chopping up the dead day old chicks!! The main instructor (I think it was Josh?) worked alongside me all day and was extremely professional in covering all aspects of the flying of the birds. Lots of hands on with the various birds. It was absolutely brilliant!! I would certainly recommend them to anyone wishing to do the short or long experiences with them.

Absolutely fantastic experience - I was lucky enough to be the only person for the session I was booked onto. Danielle obviously lives for her job and her birds. It was amazing to see the different personalities of each bird and how they interacted, with Danielle and Jason, the other member of staff. Danielle's knowledge is also amazing and I can't believe how much I learnt in such a short space of time. I will definitely be booking onto some of the other experiences, that the centre offers. I can't recommend highly enough!

The experience was really good - very intimate session with Danielle and only 2 other people taking part. We started with a brief history of falconry, a tour round all the resident birds and information about their personality and behaviour (some real characters!). Then a really good session flying a Harris Hawk and Barn Owl between us. My family could spectate during the session, it did get a bit cold however! It takes around 15 mins to walk from the car park to the falconry centre so try not to be late! Really good location to spend the day with family as well - would recommend!

Staff Review: Warwickshire Falconry Experience

The birds of prey experiences have always been popular on our website, so when Charlotte and I were invited to take part in the falconry experience at Arden Falconry, Warwickshire,  we were very excited. When we arrived at the location, there was a very spacious car park, which was helpful as this was walking distance from the falconry venue. The experience was located in a family orientated place. To get to the venue, we walked through a beautiful farm and a children’s parks. There were also small cafés so you could grab a bite to eat and enjoy the scenery.

Once we arrived at the Arden Falconry, we decided to walk around the facility, where the hawks and owls greeted us. We were amazed at all the different species of owls. I had never seen an owl or hawk in real life, and they are truly beautiful birds, even though the owls had such a funny expression on their face! Danielle, the owner kindly welcomed us and offered tea while we wandered around. She gave us an official tour, taking us to each enclosure were the birds were kept. She explained the history of the birds, and why they were given certain names. It was lovely to see the bond she had with the birds. Something that really interested me was when she explained that she is seen as the “top female”, meaning that the birds had a level of respect for her as their mother figure to some of the birds as she fed and looked after them. It was nice to see that the birds had a safe place to live as she explained that some were kept in captivity for years, while the others were either living in the wild or were given up by their previous owners.

After Danielle introduced us to the birds, she showed us a room that her and her colleagues designed themselves. The room included live footage from one of the bird’s cage. Danielle explained that during mating season and when the birds lay eggs. It is very funny/interesting to see how they behave! She explained that one time the male and female bird were both fighting to sit on their eggs to keep it warm.

The room was very creative and informative, with bird skulls, posters of interesting facts and handmade decorations, including a tree with images of different birds. Danielle said that children in particular often love playing in this room. We a few moments to explore it, Danielle then returned with a hawk named Tamora. The hawk was so eager to start training, that it was trying to fly while attached to the string!

We went to the training area; which was a big field. The field had metal rods that were used during this training session. Danielle gave Charlotte and I a brief on the Do’s and Don’ts when handling the birds, and we were then ready to take part in the experience. Charlotte went first - Danielle provided her with a glove and placed the meat between her fingers. The hawks then flew to Charlotte and sat on her arm while eating the food. To train the hawk, Danielle would move the rod further away as well as Charlotte moving further away. This meant the hawk would have to work harder and fly a longer distance to receive a “treat” which was the meat!

We then moved on to training the barn owl named Portia, Portia was my favourite bird whereas Charlotte said Tamora the hawk was her favourite as she was cheeky. I realised that the owl was calmer whereas the hawk was more mischievous. Danielle used the same training process for the owls. However, she did explain that owls do not have very good eyesight. This meant that when Portia would fly over to us for her treat, she couldn’t see the food on our hands, so we would often have to adjust our hands for her.

Overall, we had an amazing time taking part in this falconry experience, and I learned so much about the birds in in a short space of time. I would like to thank Danielle; she made this experience very informative and enjoyable.
