STAFF REVIEW: CHUBBY FELLOW EAST END FOOD TOUR
Wow, what a fantastic food tour to begin our in-person experiences. After not being able to travel and go inside venues, we were delighted to be invited by David of Chubby Fellow to one of his East End Food Tours. Although I did enjoy doing all the at-home cooking experiences, I couldn’t wait to finally eat food cooked by someone else!
As we headed to Shoreditch High Street Station, we spoke about what might be in store for us during the East End Food Tour hosted by David from Chubby Fellow.
We knew that there would be some food with spice, some delicious chocolate and some cocktails as David asked me some questions before the food tour. I wouldn’t say that I am a particularly fussy eater, so I couldn’t wait to find out what food we would be tasting.
When we arrived at Shoreditch High Street Station at 1pm, we were met by a friendly, professional guide called David who was holding a chequered umbrella so we could identify him.
Kaia and I were the only people on the East End Tour which meant that we really got to know all about David and his business, Chubby Fellow. He is a true foodie from London, who knows all the best places to eat and drink for his London food tours.
As we headed towards Brick Lane for our first stop on the food tour, David pulled out a flask from his Mary Poppins bag filled with goodies. We then stood by a statue, and David told us about the history of the area while we drank the best cocktail I have ever tasted called Gin Basil Smash.
This drink went down so nicely, and I was very excited when David sent me the recipe after the tour. This will definitely be my new go-to drink as the recipe is so simple and quick to make, but full of flavour! We then arrived at a bagel shop where David picked up a salt beef bagel, and let’s just say they were not stingy with the filling. The beef inside the bagel was cooked to perfection, and melted in the mouth.
We carried on the tour by taking a slow stroll down Brick Lane which had roads coming off it filled with amazing, quirky street art all over the walls. There were so many great photo opportunities to be had with the colourful street art.
While we stopped and took some pictures, David dug inside his bag again and our eyes lit up. He gave us some chocolate truffles to try that were inside the most beautiful packaging. There were 6 chocolates consisting of 2 different flavours.
We tried one of each, and David let us take the other 2 home which we could enjoy later on as they were extremely rich - not that I’m complaining! I love chocolate, and they were delicious alongside the sloe gin that David also lifted from his bag. David’s bag of goodies did not disappoint.
Next we started heading towards Spitalfields Market, where we passed a street that had these amazing windows with doors on them. Not only was this a food tour, but I learned many different facts about the history of Shoreditch, which made the tour more fascinating as I had never been to Shoreditch before.
I could smell all the incredible food while we walked towards Spitalfields Market, and I was intrigued to find out where David would be taking us to eat. As we waited for the food, Kaia and I took ourselves for a walk around the market where we got distracted by the beautiful jewellery; I had to drag Kaia away, otherwise she would probably still be there now!
We then met David at one of the tables, where he brought over a Jamaican Chicken Patty and a Cumin Lamb Jian Bing. The Jian Bing was the savoury highlight of my food tour. I had never heard of a Jian Bing before, so when I took a bite it was a complete surprise of flavours.
It was a kind of crepe, covered in egg with a lamb filling. I would love to try and make one at home… although I know it won’t taste as good if I make it myself. So, I guess I’ll be visiting Café Caribbean in Spitalfields Market again!
Moving onto some sweet treats… Spitalfields Market was full of incredible food stalls, but the most vibrant, beautiful, pink one that caught my eye was Humble Crumble. I always look forward to an apple crumble on a Sunday after a roast, but this crumble had a unique twist to it. It had apple at the bottom, Lotus Biscoff biscuit, marshmallow meringue and some little meringue bits on top; it was incredible!
Although a traditional crumble is my favourite pudding, I thoroughly enjoyed the one from Humble Crumble.
Last but not least, we visited a traditional pub where we enjoyed Cornish fairings with rhubarb and set custard. It was lovely to finally sit inside a pub and enjoy some food with Kaia and David. I couldn’t think of a better way to end the food tour. David then left us on Liverpool Street to carry on our day out in London.
Thanks for reading!
We would like to say a huge thank you to David for such a fantastic East End Food Tour. The food was extremely delicious and high quality. I can’t wait to go back to Spitalfields Market to try some more food from the other stalls.
