We had a truly wonderful day trip to the Moors. The journey down the line was a joy. The scenery is so beautiful all the way down it made me feel grateful to be English. I've been all over the world in my time, but nowhere is as delightful to me as the beautiful English countryside. For the price of our ticket we were allowed to break our journey at each stop down the line. There are charming little tea rooms located at many of the stations. Our tour guide had a wonderful knowledge of the areas that we visited. We were part of a small group and had ample time at each stop. Many of the stops are in pretty little villages which are good starting points for walks. This is a special day out to transport one back to a slower pace of life, I do wish I had brought my grandchildren and have resolved to do so next summer.

My wife and I had an extremely enjoyable day out with Grand Yorkshire. We actually live in North Yorkshire and were bought the trip as a gift. Despite our being very familiar with the North Yorkshire Moors we had a great day. Chris provided lots of information about the locations and general history of the moors and we almost couldn't believe how much was packed into the day without ever being rushed. It would be an excellent way for a visitor to the area to see the variety across our beautiful part of the county. We visited moorland. dales, abbeys, villages and priories. We enjoyed a stop in Whitby that allowed for exploration and lunch and, later, visited Goathland (used as Aidensfield in the "Heartbeat" TV series and Hogsmeade in Harry Potter) to join a steam train journey to Pickering. (The cost of this is not included in the Grand Yorkshire tour but is well worth the extra) where Chris met us to continue the trip in the comfortable minibus. Highly recommended.

From the very outset in York to when we arrived back, it was a great day out. Peter, our driver/guide was excellent. His knowledge of Yorkshire and the humour that went with it, made it memorable. We particularly appreciated him advising us of the time of Evensong at York Minster. It was not part of the tour and there was no benefit to him or the business, but on our return we were able to attend, something we would not have otherwise thought about doing - Marc and Julie, Thame, Oxfordshire.

The moors were just beginning to turn purple as we travelled through them after a spell of unusually hot weather. Our driver, Peter, gave us a potted history of each village, town and area we visited so that we had some background, but he didn't talk relentlessly. We had time to ask questions, and to look around and enjoy the scenery. The mining history of the moors was something new for me and it was interesting to see the ruined kilns and chimneys. Whitby was absolutely full of people but there are still plenty of places to eat without being crowded out. The sea fret was hovering just off the land and it was cold and eerie to walk out on the jetty and look back at the town. It gave atmosphere to our pictures of the abbey. The steam train was running a bit late and was fairly full but we found seats and enjoyed the trip to Pickering. We arrived back in York a bit before 5.30 pm after a very good day.

We were surpised when the mini van turned up and we were told there was only 7 people on the tour. We had such a great guide and because we where in a mini van we got to go on the smaller roads and really had a good tour of the north york moors, stopping lots of time so we can really appreciate the moors. Then we stop at Whitby for a good amount of time. Then we went to Heartbeat town which my mum loved, then a steam train ride and this was the only negative and that was because of the weather, we were in York during the very hot days and being on a seam train that has no aircon or fans and also had big glass windows meant I was burning so bad buy the end of it however this was no ones fault but I wished we had the option not to do it. But all in all a great day and one of the best day tours we went on in the UK and Ireland

This was a wonderful day from start to finish. We were collected from our hotel as promised and there were only 4 others on the tour, so it felt so personal and intimate. The whole day was unrushed and we had just the right amount of time in each place. Helmsley was a lovely coffee stop and Whitby was a lovely place for lunch and to see the coast, but the absolute highlight was the Moors. Unexpectedly beautiful, peaceful and way better than our expectations. The steam train ride was the perfect was to finish off the day - a nice relaxing chuff through the woodland and valleys to Pickering. The guide Chris was exceptionally informative and patient - and funny!

25 March I booked a tour for 30th. On the 26th of March I realized I need to change the date to 31st March so I called Viator to update my booking. They confirmed and they sent me email that my booking has been updated. Came 30th morning I missed 4 calls from the tour provider and when I sent them SMS they told me that I am booked on a tour for that day so I told them that I updated my booking and I have the email confirmation for the change. On the same day, they cancelled my booking saying that they cannot accommodate me anymore which ruined my trip in York because I planned ahead of time and I was expecting that everything is fine for the change in date given that I changed it days before and they sent me email confirmation. I was so disappointed because of this.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day tour. Our guide Chris was great. The Yorkshire Moors were very interesting, the least populated place we have seen in England! The scenery through out the day was lovely, beautiful villages and countryside. The town of Whitby was a pretty spot too but heaving with people. Such a contrast to the Moors. We enjoyed looking around there though and found a fairly quiet cafe for lunch.

We had a great day with Peter as our guide. He was very knowledgeable but didn’t bombard us with constant chat. The drive across the moors is stunning. Several stops in pretty villages. Excellent fish and chips in Whitney with views of the North Sea. Could have used 30 min more there but that’s a minor suggestion. Steam train ride from “Hogsmead” station. I would definitely recommend this as a side trip from York.

Unfortunately I didn't catch the name of our guide but he knew so much! He and his driver were friendly and professional and the tour ran without any glitches. We were warned that we may not see the steam train but then they went above and beyond to track one down for us to ride on. Each stop on the tour was enjoyable - we loved Whitby and enjoyed some of the best chips we've ever had from Robertson's. Some of the views we saw were breathtaking- photos do not do it justice. I would not do this tour again as I feel it covered everything but I would definitely use this tour company again for exploring the surrounding area.

I spent one of my favorite days in York on this trip. We were a small group of 7 and therefore had a more personalized experience. Our guide, Peter, who's a local, has a vast knowledge of history and sites and made our trip even more enjoyable. We toured several beautiful villages in the north of York and he had interesting tidbits to tell about each one. I loved the countryside, the Moors, Whitby, the train ride, and everything in between. Don't think twice about this. It made my York trip so much more.

This tour was the highlight of our trip to York! Our guide Chris was born and raised in the area, and he clearly has a love for showing visitors around his home region. Chris was very knowledgeable about the culture and history of the region and brought it to life for us. The tour began with a hotel pickup which was very convenient. We stopped to view abbey ruins, walk around the charming town square of Helmsley, drove through the North York Moors national park with multiple stops for photos, before heading down into Whitby. There was plenty of time to explore Whitby; Chris drove us to the top of the famous steps so we could see the ruins of Whitby Abbey (also known as Dracula's castle). Highly recommend Whitby Brewery just outside the abbey and fish and chips from Abbey Wharf. We then drove to Goathland for the highlight of the tour, a ride on a vintage steam train! Harry Potter fans will love exploring the film set of Hogsmeade Station before a scenic train ride through the moors. Chris was waiting to collect us from Pickering station to take us back to York. Chris was happy to drop us off at the most convenient location within York City Center, whether that was our hotel or a spot to grab dinner. I cannot recommend this tour enough!

Fabulous tour - beautiful scenery and great route which took in so many aspects of the landscape. Pete our guide was friendly and professional, thoughtful and so knowledgeable. We especially appreciated the delivery of his narrative which was very natural and very interesting. We felt very well looked after and armed with relevant information at each stop. The whole day felt un-rushed and very manageable. It was excellent value for money. Highly recommend no 12 cafe in Helmsley. Shame Daniel Craig didn’t turn up but we can’t have everything 🤷‍♀️

Not many day tours in the market provided a visit to the heather cladded Yorkshire Moorland as well as a steam train ride. We joined this tour, not only witnessed the pros of a small group (6 passengers in our trip) in an 8-seater minivan, which could move freely in country lanes in Whitby and Hemsley, but also enjoyed the advantage of arrived at the doorsteps of Whitby Abbey, instead of climbing up the 199 steps, as well as traveling on a classic steam train from Lewisham to Goathland, together with hundreds of school children on a school outing 😀 of course, the visit to Byland Abbey and hotel pick up are bonuses. Fantastic.

There were 6 of us in the group, on Tuesday this week. Our driver was Peter, who was most pleasant and informative, as we travelled round. Many good points to mention but for us it was going to and through small, attractive villages, which we would never have known about or found! Nice length of time in Whitby, as well. We were in good time for the steam- train ride from Goathland to Pickering, which we enjoyed. A great day, travelling in a comfortable mini-bus and majority of travel was away from busy main roads.

This was the best decision we made in regards to doing a tour from York. Easy to find pick-up point and then a very informative and fun journey with Peter and Jason. While there the heather was in full bloom and our guides knew the best roads to take to see it at its best(not the main road). We were never pushed for time. Stopped at the beautiful village of Helmsley. Whitby was lovely and we had ample time to wander around. I loved it when they played “Heartbeat” when driving into Goathland. Ride on steam train was well organised and fun. As we were coming back into York, Peter said we would be in time for Evensong at York Minster and guided us to the correct entrance. All in all a full and perfect day, value for money and I would have no hesitation in going on another tour with them. Fully recommended.

I've been here before several years ago. It's a lovely journey to Whitby and back through pleasant countryside by steam train. This was high season and I expected it to be very busy. It was but not to the point of discomfort. Only a few trains go all the way through to Whitby so it's important to check the timetable, which varies according to the time of year. We travelled accordingly and parked in the railway car park at Pickering (there is a £5.00 charge on the day.) I'd booked the train tickets on-line which made things easier on arrival at the station. It was a glorious day which obviously outside the control of NYMR, but it certainly helped. There were several stops which were suitable for those so inclined to get off and take photographs. The Railway maintains it's locomotives and rolling stock to a high standard and it was a pleasure to travel.

I reserved this trip as a gift for my husband's birthday. It was a total success! We have never been to this area of England and without renting a car would have missed out on very special places! Chris was a wonderful guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and made sure everyone enjoyed the day. There were so many highlights....but seeing the moors in person, wandering the lovely sea town of Whitby and riding on a steam engine train were all high on our list. Also the unexpected visit to the church in Pickering was definitely a bonus. We would highly recommend this tour. It was a great way to spend one of our days while in York.

Very busy day staff doing there best to deal with large numbers at Pickering station. Pickering station is superb clean and looks like it's still 1930. Only complaint is lack of seating on the platform it was a very hot day and out of the trainshed there was no where to sit. Looks like they've really nailed the authentic British rail experience from the unintelligible platform announcements to the 20 minute late running of the trains ( which strangely enough added to the experience.) The train itself was spotless. Again only 1 complaint, lack of toilets. But as rules about waste on tracks has changed and these are very old coaches I can see why.nmust be expensive to retrofit waste tanks etc. Enjoyed the ride through spectacular scenery to whitby where we were needed of the train and into the town. I decided to cut short my time in whitby and take a regular NR service so I could explore grosmont Again a spotless and well equipped station tho the lack of shade on a really hot day was a problem. Had a fun day all said and done really worth the trip

Great scenery. Lots of available seats. Quite expensive for the tickets. We were able to park in the station car park. Dogs are allowed on the trains. There was a buffet car too.

We had a fab day seeing the sights of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. The longer journey out to Whitby was nicely broken up with stops at small towns and view points and the tour guide, Peter, was brilliantly knowledgeable. The return leg via the steam train was too a lovely way to see part of Yorkshire's more beautiful side!

What a great day, Pete was awesome and changed my outlook very quickly. My initial expectation was that we were simply going to see a bunch of fields an rolling hills, however Pete quickly changed my mind by showing us various parts of the countryside while also educating us on the multitude of subtle items that make this such a unique tour. Trying to navigate this area with a full tour or renting a car would not even been close to possible to get what we did out of this tour. What a GREAT day...thank you Pete and Chris (see Pete your number one now)...what a GREAT experience.

What a fantastic day out & tour!! Peter was our tour guide & from the start to the finish of the day he couldn’t have been better. Knowledgeable, professional & approachable he was a great guide for our day. Despite changes to the steam train schedule (out of Grand Yorkshire’s control) Peter went above & beyond to make sure we still got the most from the day - no complaints there!! Small 8 seater - 6 of us on the tour which felt about right. Beautiful scenery, plenty of photo opportunities, a fantastic day out. We would definitely use Grand Yorkshire again.

We took this trip early in May with the pick up almost right across from York Minister. The van was full, had A/C and a very knowlegdable guide. He started explaining things as soon as we left. We stopped at Helmsley for a short period of time to see the castle ruins as well as All Saints Anglican Church. We even had so time to shop! From there we then stopped for a short walk at Hutton le Hole, a beautiful little place with a creek or brook flowing through it. From there we drove through the Yorkshire Dales and stopped by the ruins of the ovens. We arrived at Whitby just around lunch time and had the bus take us to St. Mary's up on the hill. We looked around the Abbey ruins somewhat and wanted to go in the Church but unfortunately it was closed. Going down 199 steps into the city, you arrive on narrow streets that have lots of shops. We stopped for fish and chips of curse before we caught the bus back to Goathland where we got on the North Yorkshire Moors steam train. After about a 90 minute ride onto the bus again and we stopped at Kirkham Priory to explore its ruins. From there back to York dropping us off very close to where we started. A long day but very enjoyable and well worth the money.

Great excursion, flawless tour guide “Peter” - expectations exceeded above and beyond. Very memorable trip, would definitely recommend to friends and family. A beautiful part of the U.K. and very beneficial to have a tour guide so knowledgable to explain the history and show us the hidden gems!! Nb - due to weather our steam train experience was slightly different to schedule, however Peter facilitated the changes so we still got an experience and added in further historic stops!! We defiantly got to do a lot!!
