What is There to Do in Tyne and Wear

Unique Gifts and Days Out in Tyne and Wear

NewcastleGateshead is the county’s arts capital. Once an industrial heartland, the area has undergone significant redevelopment in recent times – with many world-class cultural spaces now occupying the sites of factories, warehouses and docks. The BALTIC Centre, on the south bank of the Tyne, is an impressive example. Housed within a former flour mill, the cavernous gallery displays the work of both British and international contemporary artists in an ever-changing programme of innovative exhibitions.
The nearby Sage Gateshead is among the top concert halls in the world and Norman Foster’s undulating steel design draws architecture-admirers from far and wide – as does the striking Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Cross to the Tyne’s northern bank and visitors can explore the vibrant Ouseburn area – a thriving hub for local arts and creative industries – or the Biscuit Factory, which offers a chance – not only to view the work of over 200 artists and designers – but to purchase a piece and start your collection!

St. James’ Park is a must-see for football fans. Home to Newcastle United F.C. since 1892, the stadium is a real footballing museum and still draws tens of thousands in support of the Magpies each week. Join the ‘Toon Army’ for a game or treat a loved one to an Experience Days Stadium Tour for Two. From one fortress to another – Newcastle’s Castle Keep has a long and tumultuous history just waiting to be discovered. Tread in the footsteps of Kings and villains in its series of fascinating – often gruesome – exhibits.

Those looking for a moments peace should head to Jesmond Dene, one of the city’s most delightful green spaces. Keep an eye out for Kingfisher and Red Squirrels during a pleasant riverside walk, before heading back into town and sampling Newcastle’s diverse cafes, restaurants and pubs. The city’s wild nightlife is well renowned, but – with a voucher from Experience Days – visitors can also try a cultivated evening’s wine tasting, or take part in a Whiskey Blending Workshop.

South of NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland is a lively seafront city boasting its own proud heritage. Formerly a centre for ship-building and glass-making, the city’s top attractions now include two great beaches, the National Glass Centre and the stately Sunderland Empire Theatre. You can take a stroll through Mowbray Park – once voted the best in Britain – or shop ‘til you drop in the city centre. In nearby Washington, you’ll find the home of the first US President’s ancestors, plus a variety of rare and exotic bird species at the Wetland Centre.

Further up the coast, there’s more seaside fun in North & South Tyneside. Enjoy an award-winning Fish and Chips on the South Shields seafront or visit one of several scenic lighthouses. The area is also a great place to surf with lessons and board hire available at most beaches. Tynemouth Longsands may be the finest example – offering good waves, golden sands and breath-taking views.

Tyne and Wear is a remarkable county and visitors will leave with a heavy heart. Drivers returning south might pass Antony Gormley’s iconic ‘Angel of the North’ – perhaps the most enduring symbol of the county’s unique spirit – bidding a warm welcome and fond farewell to all those who pass.
